Physical Characteristics

Vitis munsoniana is a deciduous Climber. It is in flower from June to July, and the seeds ripen from September to October. The species is hermaphrodite (has both male and female organs) and is pollinated by Insects. Suitable for: light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and prefers well-drained soil. Suitable pH: mildly acid, neutral and basic (mildly alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It prefers dry or moist soil.

Edible Uses

Edible Parts: Fruit Leaves Sap Edible Uses: Fruit - raw or dried for later use[177]. Thin-skinned with an acid flavour, it can be eaten raw when fully ripe[183]. The fruit is borne in bunches, which makes harvesting easier[K]. Young leaves - cooked as greens or wrapped around other foods and then baked, when they impart a pleasant flavour[177]. Young tendrils - raw or cooked. Sap - used as a drink[183]. It is best harvested in the spring or early summer, but should not be taken in quantity or it will weaken the plant[K].
